Frenship Teacher Honored at Champions for Children Celebration

During their 15 Annual Champions for Children banquet on April 6, Henderson was one of only four honorees from across Lubbock to be recognized for her work in early childhood education.

Henderson has been in education for 31 years, 11 of those at Frenship, and currently teaches three-year-old children with special needs at Bennett Elementary. During the ceremony, Henderson was praised for her long educational career and dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of young children and their families.

“Mrs. Henderson has gone above and beyond in her role of advocating for young children. She works with the parents so they can see the potential their child truly has. Her heart shines as an advocate for children. Mrs. Henderson is passionate about the difference she’s making in the lives of her students and in the lives of their parents,” said Matt Ernst, the banquet emcee.

Henderson says she is honored to receive the award and recognition. “A deep desire to help all children reach their full potential led to my career as a special education teacher,” said Henderson when asked why she became an educator. “Almost every day, I see something new through kids’ eyes. It keeps me compassionate towards others, and people that are different from myself and helps me to remember there’s humanity in all of us.”

In addition to Henderson receiving the Teacher of the Year in an ISD award, the banquet also recognized the following honorees:

Teacher of the Year in a Childcare – Jazmine Ledesma, Guadalupe Early Learning Center

Robbie McGrew Memorial Award – State Representative John Frullo

Champion for Children Award – Parkhill, McDougal Companies, Plains Capital Bank
