At the beginning of the school year, a few teachers approached Bennett Elementary Principal Kelly Eluterius the and asked if they could find a way to add some plastic furniture or toys to an empty portion of the playground used by Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students.
After some brainstorming, Eluterius and the teachers decided to get movement paths painted on the empty concrete area, since equipment could not be installed in the area, and loose items could blow away in the West Texas winds. Eluterius reached out to Frenship High School Art teacher and District Visual Arts Coordinator Joey MacLean to see if he would be able to send some students out to paint the movement paths.
MacLean was completely on board with the idea and decided to involve his AP art students. After AP testing wrapped up, Eluterius sent inspiration to MacLean and the art students and they started on the project.
When the art students first came out, they mapped everything out with chalk before returning with the paint. While they were gone, the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students took advantage of the mapping and were playing on the movement paths rough draft.
While all the art students were excited to work on this project, it was extra special for a few students as they attended Bennett when they were in elementary.
“It's so amazing to have the older students come back to make something special for the elementary kids,” said Eluterius.
