Bennett Elementary Hosts Living Museum

Last week, third-grade students dressed up as their favorite historical figures as they hosted visitors in their classrooms turned museums. The students chose historical figures who made the world a better place.

They then researched their individual and used the information to complete a graphic organizer. Using the information they found, the students wrote a script that would be recited at the Open House. During the come-and-go event, parents and guests went around the classroom pushing a button on the student's hand. When the button was pushed, the students came to life and started reciting the script that they had written about the person they researched.

Sarah Baker, a third-grade reading teacher at Bennet, stated the students typically go through a rollercoaster of feelings. They are excited about choosing someone and researching them. Right before the open house, they get a little nervous about performing for so many people. However, by the end, they are smiling and talking about how proud they are.

The parents of the students were extremely supportive during the entire process. They helped their student research, revise, and memorize their scripts. They helped assemble an outfit and encouraged their students as they practiced memorizing what they were going to say. At Open House, they cheered on students after they shared. “There is so much kindness and encouragement from parents on this special day,” said Baker.

This project is beneficial for the students because it encourages three important ideas: Reading can connect to their interests, they can communicate their ideas with others, and the world is full of people who have made a positive impact.
